This year Segerstrom hosted SAUSD’s annual College Night program on Wednesday, October 6th. College Night is a fantastic opportunity for students to start preparing for life after high school. This year the event was held virtually due to COVID-19 safety requirements but was successful nonetheless.

 K-12 students and families had the opportunity to meet with college and university representatives. In these webinars, they learn about the benefits of completing higher education, and what it means for their future.

The event was divided into two sub-events; College Knowledge Webinars and College Fair. The webinars were held via Zoom and students were able to learn about what each college had in store for them. Most of the webinars were available to all students, however, some were only available to those who pre-registered. For the college fair, California congressman Lou Correa began recruiting 9-12 grade students to participate in the Young Congressional Leaders program (YCL). Those involved could meet with congressional staff and enhance their leadership and communication skills. Over 500 students have graduated from the program and all 9-12 grade students were encouraged to join.

To prepare for College Night and show their college spirit, students and staff participated in College Spirit Week provided by the counselors. The spirit week started on Monday and ended on Friday; each day students had to dress up and show their spirit according to the flyer that was sent out. On Monday, everyone was encouraged to wear their “Jag Swag” to school. On Tuesday, people wore colors representing the college they rooted for; blue and gold for UCLA or cardinal and gold for USC. Students and staff wore their chosen college gear to school on Wednesday. On Thursday, seniors wore their “College Destination” shirts. On Friday, students wore their pajamas to school as a reminder to not sleep on their college applications.

Students who did not attend College Night are highly encouraged to do so next year. This event provides a great opportunity for anyone interested in learning more about what their future could hold both academically and career-wise.
