The Oscars is an Academy Awards ceremony where A-list celebrities are invited and presented  awards for their artistic performances in the film industry. Actors who are nominated or presenting are invited as well as celebrities who are in the news at the time. Awards are also presented to film producers, directors and screenwriters. The Oscars are very similar to the Grammys, MTV awards, and many more. This year was the 94th awards ceremony presented by the Academy of Motion Pictures. 

On Sunday, March 27, the Oscars were presented from a total of 20 categories such as best actor ,which Will Smith won for his role in King Richard. Many of Hollywood’s biggest names attended the 94th Oscars such as Lily James, Zoe Kravitz, Jacob Elordi, Simu Liu, Anthony Hopkins, Elliot Page, John Travolta, Bradly Cooper, Rita Moreno, Venus and Serena Williams, Shauneen Hill and more. King Richard was nominated for five Oscars, Coda was nominated for three categories and won all, Dune was nominated for seven categories and won all, Summer of Soul won best documentary feature, best live action was won by The Long Goodbye, and Encanto won best animated feature.     

After a few hostless years, this year’s Oscars got three: Regina Hall, Amy Schumer, and Wanda Sykes. Jessica Chastain won best actress for her role in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, her first victory after three nominations, Ariana Debose won the Oscar for best supporting actress, and Troy Kotsur won best supporting actor in Coda. The academy and ABC cut eight categories from the live telecast to make room for all the celebrities and montages. Mostly below the line, categories like best film editing, original score, production design, make-up and styling, sound documentary, live action short film, and animated short film were cut out. 

During the middle of the Oscars, Chris Rock was on stage making jokes about many celebrities. Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith. He said, “Jada, I love you. G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it.” Once Chris made the joke, Jada got really upset with this and Will Smith took action and went up on stage. Chris was making little comments once Will got onstage. Will ended up slapping Chris and walked back to his seat. Once Will got back to his seat, he yelled, “Keep my wife’s name out of bleep-bleep mouth.” Everyone was shocked about this incident. 

This incident went all over the news. Both Rock and Smith became a meme on social media for this accident. Will Smith apologized about his actions in his speech and on Twitter. Chris Rock hasn’t apologized for his actions. All movies of Will Smith have been taken down from Netflix and many people don’t want Will Smith or his family in any upcoming projects. Also, all of Will Smith’s projects were put on hold until further notice. With these events happening to the actor, he has also been banned from the Oscars for a total of 10 years.
