With the school year now in session, all class conferences have been concluded. Each grade level participates in class conferences, which take place throughout campus, from the classrooms to the library and the theater. Each conference is set up for a different day.
The first conference was the Freshmen Conference on Wednesday, August 30th. The first workshop was titled Welcome to High School. In this workshop, counselors went over different freshman-specific opportunities for students as well as the rules and expectations in school. The next workshop was in students’ science class, where counselors went over study skills. Ninth-graders learned about the proper environment for studying and understanding their personality to study effectively. They also learned the importance of studying and how well it can help in the long run. Lastly, students went through Introduction to Higher Education Options in the theater during their P.E. period or sport. There, they learned about the options after high school and programs they could participate in outside of school to make them more potentially competitive applicants.
Tenth-grade students attended the Sophomore Conference on Friday, September 8th. Students started off their conference day in their history class with Welcome Back Jags. The counselors described what to do before college, the process of applying for college, and the requirements that come with it. Their next workshop Grades Matter, spoke about the organizational skills that can help students obtain and keep good grades. Through this activity, students learned to recognize the differences in the requirements necessary to graduate high school versus those necessary to go to college. Afterward, the sophomores also went through the Introduction to Higher Education Options, where they learned about the different options after high school and sophomore-specific programs they could apply for, such as Simon’s Scholars.
Senior Conference was set to take place on Wednesday, September 20th. As they’re seniors, and getting ready for what will come after high school, this conference was all about college applications. The twelfth-grade students participated in different workshops, including Jags Reach Higher and Meet Your College Reps. Each workshop focused on different college techniques and what it takes to apply. Students received papers with step-by-step instructions on how to apply, They also received a timeline of what to expect for college applications each month.
Since junior year is considered the most significant school year, the corresponding conference was set to take place after the other ones were finished. On Wednesday, September 27th, the eleventh-grade students participated in Grades Matter, Career Interest Profiler, and Introduction to California’s Four Systems of Higher Education. In the first workshop, similar to the sophomores, the juniors learned all about how to get and keep good grades as well as what those grades meant for their path to graduation or higher education. In the second workshop, students participated in a career exploration activity. By taking an online survey, they identified their abilities and interests to find careers that would match. Lastly, students learned about California’s systems of education. Juniors will have many options in the Universities of California, California States, and even private school systems, which were shared in the lesson.
Each workshop was specifically designed for each student’s grade level and their necessary information. Each presenter worked with the students to provide them with a clear and concise explanation of the different resources available to them to help with working towards higher education. They also went over the different pathways one could follow if one chooses to pursue different careers that require different training. Segerstrom, as a whole, is dedicated to helping students prepare for the world beyond high school, but we can especially thank Mrs. Huezo for leading and organizing each class conference. She works tirelessly to support us in our future endeavors.
