With the emergence of several clubs, the Hiking Club is taking a step forward this year. The club holds its meetings in A182 and hosts a hike once a month. This semester, they have been more active and vocal in their adventures.
Before forming the club, the founding members were all keen on visiting nature and bonding as a group, which they were able to achieve through the Hiking Club. Although the Hiking Club began this semester, their planning started earlier this year.
“We originally had plans to [create the club] first semester, but we were just so busy with college applications. There wasn’t a club that would go outdoors and go into nature with your friends and peers,” club president and founder, Jimena Morales (12) commented. “We wanted to create that experience for other people as well as [ourselves] so we can hang out with our friends outside of school.”
At the beginning of the second semester, Mr. Castanha and Morales helped with the founding of the Hiking Club by being club advisors. Previously, there had not been a club similar to the Hiking Club. They were motivated to share a unique experience with nature and other students.
“I enjoy hiking, I thought it would be good to promote it to Segerstrom students. I also wanted to expose them to new hikes in Orange County that they might [not have] been aware of,” Hiking Club advisor Mr. Castanha stated. “I wanted to help the school and help my AVID students start the club.”
The Hiking Club focused on providing students with hiking opportunities and fun with nature. They started with several students but now there are over a dozen hikers now in the club. The Hiking Club plans to collaborate with clubs like the new Green Initiative Club to assist with their environmental work. But, as of now, they are working towards increasing their popularity at Segerstrom.
“I hope maybe next year [the club] can do more things. And [for the club] to be more [of a] known club, as right now it’s an unknown club,” vice president Javier Moreno (12) commented. “Next year, [I hope] it carries on and more people get involved.”
The club hosts casual hikes for anyone to join. Their previous hikes were at Irvine’s Shady Canyon Trail and Newport Beaches’ Back Bay Loop. The Hiking Club encourages anyone interested in the outdoors to join them on their next hike in the City of Orange.

Although, Mr. Castanha my freshmen English teacher I knew him very well, last year. Something cool , is he started off with a new club, called the hiking club, he looks like he’s teaching students to hike, and letting them travel around the world to hike millions of miles.
