After contributing one year to Segerstrom News, Sophia Nevarez, a staff writer, is graduating. She enjoys creative writing, reading, listening to music, and spending time with her friends. Sophia, a very valuable writer for Segerstrom News, won a Best of SNO award for her article “Visually Impaired Student Answers FAQs About Blindness.” She describes herself as introverted, adventurous, and observant.
1) What is/are your favorite memory(ies) of Segerstrom?
Some of my favorite memories of Segerstrom are the school dances. I loved attending and enjoying them with my friends. Other memorable occasions include receiving honor roll awards, performing in the choir concerts, and going on field trips to Disneyland and the Los Angeles Zoo.
2) How has your high school experience at Segerstrom shaped your life?
My years in high school allowed me to understand myself better. Through my exploration of new classes, I was able to discover more about myself. For example, joining Segerstrom News this year resulted in me realizing that I have a genuine passion for journalism. Strengthening my friendships also impacted me significantly; the people I interacted with during high school shaped who I am today.
3) What are your plans after high school graduation?
Following graduation, I plan to attend Orange Coast College. I hope to become a high school English teacher.
4) What is one piece of advice you would give to an incoming freshman?
Get involved with school clubs. I wish I’d joined more clubs and activities when I was a freshman. They’re a great way to form new friendships and pursue interests and hobbies.
