Senior Boxes have gained massive popularity in the past few years due to social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Senior boxes are boxes that seniors decorate in many different ways, using paint, glitter, rhinestones, etc. These boxes will later hold memories, like pictures and dance tickets, that are made during their senior year.
Although some people don’t understand the trend or the importance of having a senior box, the people who make them find them nostalgic. The reasons for making the boxes vary from practicality to just having something to do with friends. Friend groups set up a day where they go to parks, the beach, or to someone’s house just to make these boxes and have a good time. So, not only do these boxes hold memories, they are a memory within themselves.
Alina Canales (12), explains why she made a senior box: “I made a senior box to hold all of my memories from senior year and to spend time with my friends while we make them.”
Many people decorate their boxes in different ways, theming them with specific colors, music artists, movies, and many more. For example, Sean Brown (12) decorated his box with his favorite band, Coldplay.
“I really like Coldplay because of the high energy in their songs. I am in the top 1% of their listeners on Spotify, so I thought it would be cool to decorate my box in the theme of their music,” Brown says.
Another way seniors have decorated their boxes is in the theme of their favorite childhood movies. Karla Merino (12) decorated her box in the theme of Toy Story.
“I think toys are part of people’s childhoods. And I love how Andy gave away his toys at the end of the movie, I think it symbolizes the next step in life, just like my senior box,” explains Merino.
Senior boxes are meant to hold keepsakes, but many people are still confused as to what you could actually put in them. All in all, people use them for different reasons, but the most common are for polaroid pictures, dance tickets, and gifts they may get from their friends throughout the year.
Yaniz Nunez (12), explains what she plans to fill her senior box with. “As the year goes on, I plan to put items that I get such as dance tickets, football tickets, polaroids, stickers, and just anything that people give me.”
This trend has rapidly grown over the last two years, and will continue to grow as seniors continue to make them. These nostalgic memory boxes are a great way to be creative and an awesome opportunity to organize a hangout with your friends.
