This is the first time that Segerstrom has ever offered a fashion design club to students. Through it, participants have the opportunity to design clothes and learn more about fashion and the history of it. The club encourages students to find their own unique style and ways to express themselves. They will teach students the basics of sewing, creating pattern designs, and finding your own personal style. Members will get the opportunity to make fun arts and crafts projects, everything will be hands-on and creative to fit your style. The president and founder of the club is senior Estrella Magana, while the vice president is Alely Padilla, also a senior. The advisor is French teacher Mrs. Leonard.
The fashion club was first introduced at club rush on August 28th. Students were able to learn some fashion tips and see some of the future activities the club will be hosting. Magana (12) shares her motivations for starting the club and how she got into fashion.
“I always had an interest in fashion ever since I was younger because my cousin and I would design our own outfits and talk about how one day we would be fashion designers. I also got interested in fashion design because my mom always taught me how to style my outfits since I was younger. Whenever we went out, I always had a matching outfit with accessories to complete the outfit.”
There are many tips and tricks when it comes to perfecting your fashion style. The club provides all the fashion tips that could be just right for you. There will also be many fun bonding opportunities throughout the year during their meetings, like bracelet making, for example. Although bonding is fun, many students joined for the fashion aspect of the club. Magana talks about what students will be learning in the club.
“People would get to learn about the history behind fashion design, and they would get hands-on experiences on learning how to sew and how to use a sewing machine to make their own creative designs, as well as being able to participate in many fun activities, such as creating your outfits based on what we can find at a thrift store and having fashion design workshops.”
Many students are not afraid of showing their true style, but there are some students who are shy to show their styles- which is what the club is for. Students get to bring out their true self by wearing the clothes they want to. In the club, students will also learn about the history of fashion as it is a visual marker of societal change nowadays seeing as it has become an important highlight for many people. Magana shares what else they will be doing during the year.
“We will be working on designing and sketching outfits, designing clothing, making accessories, and having bonding opportunities as well, like having fashion shows when completing a hand or machine sewn design.”
Everyone knows all of the fashion trends that come and go, like skinny jeans to oversized shirts. Many people get into fashion and learn more about their style in their high school years. For example, they find out what jeans look good on them or what colors match them. Magana shares her love for fashion design, showcasing just how important starting this club was for her.
“When I have an important event coming up, I always love to come up with ideas on how I would love my outfit to look like. I make a board with outfits I think are similar to what I have in mind, and sometimes when I don’t see anything similar I design my own outfit to help give me more of an idea! I do design when I have free time because I love to come up with new designs and decorate the design. I love shopping for new outfits, and would love to someday visit the Dior Museum!”
Their first meeting took place on September 18th, 2024. They introduced the board members and gave a full rundown of their club. They had snacks and played games. Many students attended and were very excited to find their styles and learn about designing their own clothes.
Magana shares what people would do while being in this club.
“I absolutely know that people will get an amazing experience being in the club.”
