In the back of A building at Segerstrom High School newly awarded teacher of the year, Mrs. Conferti, can be found. You’ll see her with a bright smile on her face greeting students as they walk into her classroom and bringing out all the positive vibes in people.
Every year, Segerstrom awards teacher of the year and support staff of the year to congratulate these individuals on their great accomplishments and all the hard work they have done for the students of Segerstrom High School and the community.
For this year’s awards, Mrs. Conferti was named Teacher of the Year, and many students were very proud of this achievement for her. After years of working with her students to ensure they can succeed, Mrs. Conferti set an example of what receiving this award is truly about: hard work.
Mrs. Conferti has taught many English classes over the years, such as AP Language, English 9 College Prep, and Film, Literature, and Composition. She has proved how hard she is willing to work to be a teacher who students can understand and be content to learn with.
“You can tell she is passionate about the subject she teaches, and she tries her best to help students. As a student in her class, I feel like I’m learning a lot in her class. I just overall think she’s a great teacher,” says junior Leslie Perez.
It’s not just English classes. Mrs. Conferti also teaches Journalism classes here at Segerstrom and oversees the Segerstrom News website. After the previous Journalism teacher left a couple of years ago, Mrs. Conferti took over and has strived to improve the program ever since. We have not only read news stories but also seen video packages on Segerstrom News Today, Word on the Street, and the Jags Talk podcast come out of the website thanks to her and many students’ ideas.
Mrs. Conferti has had experience in the journalism world as she used to work at OC Weekly. Although she did not end up pursuing journalism, she gave her students the knowledge of what she learned, which has greatly benefited the website and its progression.
This great teacher sets an amazing example of what hard work means and is also a great example of being kind. She has proved that she has earned this award to school faculty and students alike. Mrs. Conferti is sure to do great things in the future.
“I like that she is a great teacher who is always ready to teach, always in a great mood, and overall her class is really fun and interesting,” says senior Kenya Del Valle.
