In early February 2025, the cities of Santa Ana and Orange in Orange County, California, became focal points for protests against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Trump administration’s immigration policies. These demonstrations reflected widespread community concern over increased ICE activities and the potential for mass deportations.
Santa Ana, with a 77% Latino population and an estimated 80,000 undocumented residents, is the only sanctuary city in Orange County. With Santa Ana being a city with a lot of undocumented immigrants, many people are living in fear that either themselves or a loved one may get deported.
In response to these fears, thousands gathered in Santa Ana on February 3, 2025, near the intersection of Bristol Street and McFadden Avenue. The peaceful march featured participants chanting slogans and holding signs advocating for immigrant rights. The demonstration remained calm, with no arrests reported, and was met with support from passing motorists who honked their horns in solidarity. Similarly, on February 9, 2025, a protest took place at the Old Town Plaza Circle in Orange. Organized by local Latino community groups, the demonstration aimed to oppose the Trump administration’s anti-immigration policies and to urge city officials to prevent ICE from conducting raids within their communities.
On February 3, 2025, the Latin community planned a movement called “A Day Without Immigrants” movement, which encouraged immigrants and allies to refrain from work and school to highlight their contributions to society, and also saw participation in these areas. Many of our Jaguars participated to show their support. Not only by participating in movements and protests, but as well as the Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) training their staff on what to do if ICE shows up to the school.
The protests in Santa Ana and Orange reflect the growing anxiety over ICE activities and the impact of federal immigration policies on local communities. These demonstrations emphasize the importance of sanctuary cities and local resistance to deportations. By coming together in solidarity, residents continue to advocate for immigrant rights and work towards a safer, more inclusive environment.
