Though college applications have been successfully sent in by seniors, many still remember the challenging time spent working through the various sections of the applications filling out everything about their last four years of high school. In more recent years, it’s become clear that alongside grades, a student’s extracurriculars are equally as important. Many students can agree that this was a challenging section to complete.
Luckily, Segerstrom has a wide array of extracurriculars to offer to students regardless of their schedules, grades, or other factors.
To begin, a basic yet fun activity that students can partake in is joining a club that piques their interests. Segerstrom has many clubs to offer- everything from community service clubs, academic clubs, or clubs for student’s hobbies.
For those interested in earning community service hours, Segerstrom has clubs such as CSF, Key Club, Kiwins, and many more. Some academic clubs include NHS or Academic Decathlon. Students wanting to embrace their hobbies and interests can join Art Club, Polynesian, K-Pop, and more.
To elevate your college applications, Segerstrom students even have the opportunity to start their own clubs.
“Starting a club was a really great experience. I’m getting to address issues that are important to me and make changes in my community,” said Junior Dylan Velarde, who recently started Segerstrom’s YDSA club.
Aside from the various opportunities Segerstrom offers, there is also a wide variety of off-campus extracurriculars. Some popular examples are volunteering at institutions like hospitals or shelters. There are also popular internships and programs for high-achieving students, such as programs at Ivy League colleges.
If students don’t find an outside opportunity that piques their interest, they can even pursue something totally unique to their interests in the form of passion projects. Passion projects can be anything from starting a blog, creating music, or even going so far as to set up their own non-profit.
One last option students may not even consider is applying for jobs. Regardless of their place of work, maintaining a job shows various admirable traits- everything from responsibility, punctuality, collaboration skills, and more.
Extracurriculars are a great way to enhance your college application’s activities section, as well as generally making your high school years a lot more enjoyable. With plenty of options for all kinds of students, it’s safe to say that with a little bit of searching, each Segerstrom student can find something that works for them.
