On Thursday, May 8th, Segerstrom Athletics celebrated the 2025 MVPs of Character. One athlete was chosen from each sport by their coaches, who believed they best embodied the role of MVP of character. This celebration featured a catered dinner at the Elks Lodge and speeches from each coach as well as Mr. Canzone, Segerstrom’s Athletic Coordinator.
The awarded Fall MVPs of Character were the following athletes:
Boys Cross Country: Alfredo Vargas
Girls Cross Country: Samantha Contreras
Flag Football: Emma Garza
Football: Noah Tagaloa
Girls Tennis: Priscilla Gomez
Girls Volleyball: Carmen Sarria
Boys Water Polo: Christopher Esparza
Senior Christopher Esparza highlights the gratitude he feels towards his coach and his teammates in receiving this high honor: “I’m incredibly honored and humbled to be chosen as the 2025 MVP of character for boys water polo. It means a lot to me that my contributions to the team, both in and out of the pool, have been recognized. I’m grateful for my teammates, coaches, and everyone who has supported me along the way.”
The awarded Winter MVPs of Character were the following athletes:
Boys Basketball: Andrew Aguilar
Girls Basketball: Claudia Solis
Boys Soccer: Erik Montano
Girls Soccer: Emily Robles
Girls Water Polo: Celeste Carmona
Boys Wrestling: Jerry Salas
Girls Wrestling: Emily Marquez
Boys Basketball recipient, senior Andrew Aguilar, credits his coach for teaching good sportsmanship and etiquette: “It is a pleasure to be chosen as the 2025 MVP of character for boys basketball. My coach all year long has preached about etiquette and agency so it is an honor to be chosen around such good young men. I am very proud of myself for being selected for this award and this is something I will always remember.”
The awarded Spring MVPs of Character were the following athletes:
Baseball: Elijah Sandoval
Boys Lacrosse: Alvaro Favela
Girls Lacrosse: Sidney Martinez
Softball: Alyssa Martinez
Stunt: Chanel Long
Boys Swim: Gabriel Margo
Girls Swim: Karla Merino
Boys Tennis: Benjamin Tong
Boys Track: Rudy Preza
Girls Track: Mia Borgarin Candela
Boys Volleyball: Diego Zambrano
Senior athlete Sidney Martinez shares that she is proud that her hard work paid off: “MVP of Character for Girls Lacrosse was a huge accomplishment as I’ve worked hard to try and help everyone on the team in any way possible.”
These athletes demonstrated great character on and off the field, as well as in the classroom and in their community. They were awarded a certificate and a patch for their letterman jackets to showcase this high honor.
Overall, this celebration was very successful in highlighting our athlete’s great character and the coaches’ speeches were very personal toward each athlete. Segerstrom is very proud of our MVPs of character and we are sure they will carry on this mindset to their future plans.
