As fall sports have ended, athletes in winter sports have already begun preparing for the season. The winter sports contain both boys and girls basketball, soccer, and wrestling. Girls Water Polo will also be involved this season.

Boys basketball season is currently involved in the Santa Ana Tournament, which takes place from Monday, November 13th through Saturday, November 18th. Their first home game is on Monday, November 20th at 7:00 P.M. against Huntington Beach.

First-year varsity player, Nicholas Cervantes (11) shares his feelings about his first season on varsity. “I feel very happy about the season starting, this is my first year on varsity which makes me happy about this season. My goals this season are to try and get playing time and do my part to win with the team,” he says.

Girls varsity basketball has a home non-conference game against Foothill on Wednesday, November 15th at 6:00 P.M. They hope to continue their success from last season by qualifying for CIF and doing their best in future competitions.

Isabel Pena (12), a girls’ soccer varsity player shares how she feels for her last season. “I’m kind of nervous about starting the season because I have new teammates and new coaches, and since it’s my last year I feel more pressure than past year,” she adds.

Boys soccer season begins with an away game against cross-town rival Saddleback High School on Wednesday, November 15th. The Frosh-Soph plays at 3:00 P.M., JV plays at 4:30 P.M., and Varsity plays at 6:30 P.M. All three levels are looking forward to improving as the season continues and hopes to be victorious in the process.

Girls Water Polo will have their first game on Thursday, November 16th at 3:30 P.M. against Trabuco Hills at home.

Celeste Carmona (11), girls varsity water polo co-captain details what she feels for this season. “I am nervous, eager, and excited to get started. I am coming back after a year and a half-long injury and hope to continue thriving in the recovery process,” she says.

The wrestling season is also quickly approaching, with both boys and girls having their first matches in a two-day tournament from November 17th to 18th.

Kaylie Amaya (12), girls’ varsity wrestler shares her goals and aspirations for this upcoming season. “My goal is to get stronger and learn to get less anxiety overall for everything and hopefully make it far after CIF,” says Amaya.

Segerstrom Sports has much to look forward to with the winter season coming up, and our athletes will continue to try their hardest to see their teams succeed. Segerstrom is proud of our athletic program and we will continue to support all sports as the seasons progress. Hopefully, any goals athletes’ have, personal and team-wide, are met, and we are excited to see what the winter season brings.
