Recently, Segerstrom has introduced new homemade lunches on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The food that the cafeteria staff will prepare for lunch is announced in the morning announcements so the students can anticipate what will be available.
These new homemade menu items were introduced at the beginning of March in order to provide students with more exciting, tasty meals to look forward to between classes. As of now, they’ve made beef hamburgers and cheeseburgers, carnitas, birria, and birria ramen.
So, with this new food, what’s the consensus?
The least favored homemade meal was the beef hamburgers. They’re not often chosen during lunch, and for the students who do pick them up, they don’t find the food favorable. Miranda Mena, a sophomore, says, “Lowkey I don’t [care] too much for them.” Abby Hernandez, a senior, expressed passionately that she disliked them. Natalie Leon, a senior as well, gave the critique that the beef hamburgers “could use seasoning.” Still, as with everything, something will always be favored by someone. Melody Herrera, senior, noted that, “The beef hamburgers were better than other times I’ve tried them.”
On the other hand, the carnitas were a welcome surprise to students. They’re served with street corn and either tortillas or tortilla chips, the chips of which are notably less in quantity. The general opinion is that they’re a welcomed new option, being tasty and a nice variety to the school’s menu. As Melody says, “The carnitas were pretty good, I was surprised that we had that as an option for lunch.”
Then, there’s the universal favorite among all the new foods, the birria options. On Thursdays, the lunch ladies serve birria tacos or birria ramen, the two alternating each week. The birria tacos on their own are delightful to students, but it’s really the birria ramen that steals the show. As of recently, birria ramen has been trending on TikTok, mixing the flavors of both foods into a truly delectable combination. It appears that SAUSD noticed this trend, thinking it fit to serve this treat to students free of charge. This is evident as well to the kids, as Thursday lunch lines are often inundated with people. Abby, Natalie, as well as Melody all appraised the meal themselves, and that positive sentiment is shared by many, many more students.
Segerstrom is more than grateful for the work the lunch ladies do for us, and we should all be grateful for the fact that our district is able to provide students lunch for free. Other districts require students to pay for their meals, either everyday or through a meal plan, while we are lucky enough to be provided for in such a manner. Regardless of the opinions on the food, they’re a gift to have and enjoy.
Make sure to have a good lunch today, Jags!
