As of March 9th, Segerstrom high school’s administration has decided to give detentions to students who fail to sign up for tutorials. This has been implemented to ensure students pick a class to go to for tutorial.
Minga is still a fairly new system to Segerstrom, being added in the 2024-2025 school year along with tutorials. Minga has been used as a digital form of hall passes, bathroom passes, and to sign up for tutorials. Meanwhile, tutorials have taken the place of weekly Monday homerooms. The goal with tutorials when first applied was to give students the opportunity for tutoring, making up homework, and getting additional educational help during school hours. With teachers, they’d have the opportunity to have test retakes, make ups, extra review time, and administer detention.
However, since the tutorial’s addition, there’s been an issue with students not signing up for classes. During the 2024-25 school year, ex-principal David Casper would make frequent announcements to remind students to sign up. Even with those attempts, hundreds of students still failed to apply for tutorials at an appropriate time. This caused the library to be inundated with students to deal with during the extra period. Since the period was added for student’s benefit, and they weren’t utilizing the time, it became a strain for administrators to handle.
With Mr. Bennett and Dr. Hawkins in administration now, they’ve taken significant measures to make sure students do their part in signing up for tutorials.
Admin’s main goal is to lessen their workload and allow tutorials to aid students to its fullest capabilities. While signing up for tutorial has been detonated as a chore by many students, it’s something we all need to do, similar to turning in an assignment for a class. Tutorials are always open until 10 PM the day before, so make sure to sign up Jags!
